Chapter Nineteen
It was May, and the weather was warming up. Thank God, so was the lake. As Jake powered up and down parallel to the shore, he realised he was going to have to forgo his daily ogle at Anna in her swimsuit this morning. Even he didnât have the balls to do that while her dad was here.
Since the manâs arrival two days ago, Jake had pretty much kept out of their way. It was one thing knowing the woman he now lusted over â and how the hell had that happened? â had a dad who was a cop, it was another looking the man in the eye.
Hauling himself out of the lake, he grabbed his towel, threw it round his neck, and walked the now familiar path back to the castle. Heâd been here five weeks and already it felt like he was living a different life. Here, he was a castle manager. Hell, for the last week, a few locals had even called him a hero. He was also part of a couple â a guy lucky enough, worthy enough, to have caught and held the eye of a woman like Anna. Here, he felt respected, even though little of it was real.
As he rounded the corner, the pool came into view and he skidded to a halt.
Anna was there, as heâd expected. But so was her dad, sitting on one of the loungers, reading the paper and clearly enjoying the morning sun. Thankfully Anna was in the pool, her curves hidden. As long as she stayed in there, he was okay. Heâd nod a greeting, and hurry on by.
âJake.â Her dad raised his hand and waved.
âChief Super.â
âI told you, call me Patrick. Iâm retired now.â He nodded towards the castle and then the lake. âHere, Iâm merely Annaâs father, taking a few daysâ holiday in beautiful surroundings.â
All true, but to Jake the man would always be a cop first. âWell, I hope youâre enjoying your stay.â He felt his skin itch and wished heâd put on a shirt or some jeans. Anything so he wasnât standing nearly naked in front of the man who always made him feel like a delinquent. Probably because you were one.
He was about to hotfoot it away when Anna called over to him. As he watched her lever herself out of the pool, water dripping down her long, shapely legs, costume clinging to every single inch of her skin, his tongue got stuck in his throat. Donât look at her breasts.
Too late. His eyes had a will of their own and no way were they not going to focus in on the sight theyâd been happily enjoying for the last five weeks.
She must have been aware of the direction of his gaze because she hastily grabbed a towel and wrapped it round her.
And when his eyes finally made their way up to hers, she gave him a knowing look.
âDad wants to see Bellagio and Varenna after breakfast. We wondered if you wanted to come with us?â
Oh yeah, that sounded like a great idea.
